ASB Gambia - Dr. med. Mathew Anyanwu
Dr Mathew Anyanwu has been working for the health clinic as our resident gynecologist since September 2005. In the following paragraphs he describes his career and work in his own words:
Career
"In September 2005, I joined the ASB health centre on parttime. Then it was mainly an out-patient clinic. There were plans to upgrade the clinic to do maternity services; however, not until Jan-Feb 2006 that was started. The labour ward has four beds each in a seperate cubicle and is well-equipped. Thereafter the CTG unit was developed and is now effectively utilised fo hight risk obstetric conditions. The theatre became operational for emergency caesarian hysterecties which can save lives.

Before coming to ASB I was a senior registrar in Royal Victoria Teaching Hospital in Banjul. There I learned all the necessary skills required to perform all obstetrics and gynecological surgeries. In September 2006 I went for a gynecological ultrasound trainig course organised by the Royal College of obstetricians and gynecologists. ASB-Gambia paid the course fee. After this training, I acquired special skills in the use of vaginal probe for gynecological problems. With knowledge of pattern recognition, the ASB Clinic was able to do ultrasound imaging for diagnostic purposes.
In May 2007, I became a full-time staff of ASB Gambia and since then the antenatal registration and care continued to improve. The improved reproductive health services at the clinic is thanks to hard workd; from the management for providing necessary equipment and from the staff for their cooperation in continuous medical education. Our risk management meetings have proved to be essential for effective change in modern medical practise."
Memorable events at ASB
"In 2006, precisely 28th April to 31st May, I did ten surgeries for ruptured ectopic pregnancy. Two had conservative surgery because the rent on the tube was repairable. Most had their reproductive tract intact which was confirmed by successful subsequent pregnancies. All were open surgereris. The successful treatment of rare obstetric complications shows the techonological advance which this clinic has compared to most other hostpitals in the area."
